The Rohingya Crisis

Who are the Rohingya refugees? • An ethnic Muslim minority group who self-identifies as Rohingya Where are they living? • Myanmar’s Rakhine state, which borders Bangladesh and India Where is the discrimination rooted? • Despite the Rohingya tracing their roots in Myanmar back centuries, they are not officially recognized as an ethnic group by the Myanmar government and are instead largely considered illegal immigrants from Bangladesh What started the refugee crisis? • Discriminatory policies of Myanmar’s government since the 1970s as well as violence between differing ethnic groups What is happening right now? • In late August 2017, fresh armed conflict broke out in Rakhine State between government military forces and minority groups, mainly the Rohingya who largely populate this area • As violence escalated, Myanmar’s military and police have mounted brutal attacks on the ethnic minority of Rohingya, including: o burning down hundreds of villages o performing mass killings (including the murder of children) o rape
