With USC elections coming up and with the USC slate, Faculty President, Faculty Councillor, and Student Senator positions about to be filled, it is only fitting as someone who has filled more than one of those roles to talk about how great of an experience I have had, and what aspects of my life have been improved since I began my involvement in student leadership.
1. You meet a lot of friends: In my role as USC Councillor and FHS President, I have not only met a tone of students in my faculty, but also in the many different disciplines offered here at Western. All of these students were able to offer new perspectives on the Western experience and helped me to develop a sense of how different all the students who attend Western truly are, and how much every student, despite their different backgrounds, has unique that they can contribute to oour campus. Further, being with students who have the same passion continues to foster my growth as those who had been in leadership positions are very much willing to pass on their guidance and take you under their wing.
2. You gain a lot of skills: In my experience, I have learned so many soft and hard skills it’s hard to list them all here, but I’m going to try to highlight some of the best examples of skills you can pick up in a student leadership role. The most evident skill is the ability to work in a team to accomplish a goal. Similarly, other complimentary skills such as advocating for your peers, making your views heard, public speaking, and time management all come along with representing your peers on student council.
3. Making connections along the way: On top of the amazing friends I have made in my role, I have also met some amazing campus and community partners. From a student leadership role, you should expect to meet faculty and university leaders and leaders of those in the community. Who knows, you might even land a summer job! "
